Certification in Humanitarian Medical Logistics Practices
(MedLog)
The Certification in Humanitarian Medical Logistics Practices (MedLog) is a specialized training program designed to strengthen the skills of professionals responsible for managing medical supply chains in humanitarian and emergency contexts.
Originally launched in 2009 and relaunched to include e-learning elements in 2024, MedLog addresses the unique challenges of procuring, transporting, storing, and distributing essential medical supplies in crisis settings.
Developed at the request of the global humanitarian community, MedLog provides targeted training for:
- Supply chain professionals managing medical commodities
- Pharmacists who often perform logistics functions
- Humanitarian workers involved in medical program delivery
Program Structure
The CHL Certification Program consists of two components:
- Self-Guided Practice (via DisasterReady)
- Distance Learning Assignments (via Logistics Learning Alliance)
Learners may complete the Self-Guided Practice as a standalone course and receive a Certificate of Achievement.
To earn the full globally recognized CHL Certification from CILT (UK), both components must be completed.
1. Self-Guided Practice (DisasterReady)
A foundational, self-paced learning experience that serves as a great introduction to all elements of the program and is delivered through online learning via the DisasterReady portal.

Duration: ~18.5 learning hours (approx. 1 month at 5 hrs/week)

2. Full Qualification (with Logistics Learning Alliance)
Learners complete structured assignments based on the SCILaid case study, with access to additional resources and personalized support from an experienced coach.

- One-on-one coaching and feedback

Duration: ~50 learning hours (approx. 3 months at 5 hrs/week)

Course Content: Five Comprehensive MedLog Units
The MedLog course consists of five units covering all elements of the humanitarian medical supply chain.
Unit 1: Humanitarian Medical Supply Chains
This unit introduces the fundamentals of humanitarian medical assistance and the role of supply chains in delivering medical programs.
Key learning outcomes:
- Understand types and characteristics of medical programs
- Explore how program needs influence supply chain design
- Identify characteristics of medical items that affect planning and operations
- Learn essential documentation, information flows, and performance factors
- Understand how to maintain supply chain flow in challenging environments
Unit 2: Medical Procurement
This unit explains how to source medical items safely, ethically, and efficiently.

- Understand the procurement function and procurement cycle
- Learn specific requirements for purchasing medical commodities
- Explore quality assurance standards and compliance procedures
- Identify steps to ensure medical items meet required specifications
Unit 3: Warehousing & Inventory Management
This unit covers best practices for storing and managing medical stock.

- Proper handling and storage techniques to protect product quality
- Understanding warehouse roles and storage requirements for medical items
- Inventory control, record-keeping, and documentation
- Evaluating storage facilities and operating options (owned, shared, outsourced)
Unit 4: Transport of Medical Items
This unit focuses on the safe movement of medical supplies within the humanitarian supply chain.

- Handling dangerous goods and controlled substances
- Working with third-party logistics and transport providers
Unit 5: Medical Waste & Disposal
This final unit explains the safe and compliant disposal of medical and hazardous waste.

- Types of medical waste: non-hazardous, hazardous, expired, damaged
- Approved disposal processes and methods
- Environmental and health risks of improper disposal
- Compliance requirements for humanitarian operations
